Beschrijving
The Wittenborner Heide is a nature reserve covering approximately 294 hectares. It features a diverse landscape, including dunes, dry grasslands, moors, and woodlands. The area is accessible via a good network of paths and is not overcrowded.
There is a high density of breeding and migratory birds of prey, such as the Zeearend and Wespendief. These birds of prey can sometimes be seen foraging over the heathland. Another large part of the reserve consists of a forest, where, for example, the Groene Specht, Zwarte Specht and the rare Houtsnip breed. Ground-nesting birds of the heathland include Boomleeuwerik and Boompieper. In addition, many different bird species rest here during migration or can be observed during migration. Many of the bird species listed in the birdlist below can only be observed during migration, such as Kievit and Wulp.
