Natural salt marsh coastline along the Wadden Sea that is very accessible.
Naturstrand Hilgenriedersiel is part of the National Park Wadden Sea. The natural beach of Hilgenriedersiel is the unique possibility to visit the edge of the salt marsh going into the sea. Even swimming is allowed. At most other places, entering that far into the national park is prohibited. Therefore you can also experience the typical Wadden Sea birds much closer. Especially in winter you can see Frater, IJsgors or Oeverpieper closer than usual. During the summertime you can see Tureluur and Graspieper up close. A Wadden Sea experience worth a visit. You can also check the whole salt marsh around this place, to the east extending to Neßmersiel and to the West towards Norddeich.
There is a parking spot on the other side of the dike. Click on the P in the map to get directions to the parking spot. With a bike, you can make a tour along the North sea coast, covering a big area of salt marsh, e.g. from Norddeich (train station) via Neßmersiel, Dornumersiel, Bensersiel to Esens (train station). The Naturstrand Hilgenriedersiel is only accessible on foot. Be aware, that it can be very muddy!
Consider the tides (see the link to the tides table below)! Please stick to the rules of the National Park.
