Big and important low moor and wetland north of Lake Ammersee. The moors, wet meadows and reeds attract many birds.
The Ampermoos nature reserve is located north of Lake Ammersee, between Eching am Ammersee and Grafrath. The Amper and some smaller streams flow through a 550 hectare wetland that is protected by the Ramsar Convention and the EU. The Ampermoos is one of the largest low-flow fens in Bavaria. The name Ampermoos indicates a low moor, because in Bavarian “moos” stands for a low moor. The interior of the Ampermoos is not realy accessible by paths. A nature observation tower near Kottgeisering enables a view over the area. Over 300 species of birds have been spotted on low moors, wet meadow, reeds and the adjacent lake Ammersee, including Kwartel, Grauwe Kiekendief, Rode Wouw, Zwarte Wouw, Smelleken and Slechtvalk. The Ampermoos is an important breeding ground for Watersnip, Kievit, Wulp, Paapje, Roodborsttapuit and Graspieper. And during migration a resting place for many migratory birds in spring and autumn. In winter the Ampermoos is a great area to see Blauwe Kiekendief because sometimes big groups use the area as a roost during the winter months. Klapekster can also be seen in winter. Geese, ducks and grebes can be found in the (fenced) clarification ponds in Eching am Ammersee (see the map). Note: The Ampermoos area cannot be entered from March 1st to July 15th. But there are paths around the area (see the map). Several information boards in the area help with orientation.
Eching am Ammersee can be reached via the A96 motorway towards Lindau, Inning am Ammersee exit, then immediately right again onto State Road 2070 towards Stegen. You drive parallel to the highway and turn off at the roundabout to Eching am Ammersee. After crossing the Windach stream, turn right into Stegener Straße towards the sports field. Between the sports field and the sewage treatment plant, a path goes left into the nature reserve. There is an information board here that shows the paths that can be entered. There is also an observation tower southwest of Grafrath. 500 meters north of Kottgeisering (Fürstenfeldbruck district) at Grafrather Straße 53, a sign shows the way to the tower. Parking facilities are available. Another option is to explore the roads on the west side of the Ampermoos (see the map). But note: The Ampermoos area cannot be entered from March 1st to July 15th. Please keep this in mind during your visit and do not enter the Ampermoos during this period.
Dont forget to check the lake Ammersee that borders the Ampermoos. It's also rich in birds.
