The Aalkistensee Nature Reserve covers 50 hectare, the entire area of the lake and beyond. The nature reserve is of great importance for regional bird protection. Breeding birds include Waterral, Dodaars, Bosrietzanger and Wintertaling. Paapje and Roodborsttapuit can be seen as migrants. Among the other birds you can see are Visarend, Aalscholver, Rode Wouw and Zwarte Wouw.

Car park south of the lake on the railway line, accessible from the road between Maulbronn and Ölbronn. Click on the P in the map to get directions. A circular path of 5 km runs from the parking lot down to the beginning of the dam, there to the east south of the lake, through the forest in a counter-clockwise direction around the lake. To see different habitats, a spotting scope is necessary for some birds.
