Forêt Domaniale de la Coubre is a large forest with pine trees, holm oaks, locust trees and open areas with broom/whin scrubs. The open and clear-cut areas are particularly interesting from an ornithological point of view. They are home to the rare Provençaalse Grasmus, Boomleeuwerik and Nachtzwaluw. Boompieper and Koekoek can be observed on the edges of the open areas in spring. Kuifmees and Bergfluiter are also a regional peculiarity and are rarely found anywhere else in the department.
In early summer, with a bit of luck, you can also hear Dwergooruil calling. Slangenarend can sometimes be observed flying overhead. There are rare reports in late summer and fall of Porseleinhoen at the extinguishing ponds that exist in the forest. With a bit of luck, you may also come across red deer. There is a good trail network in the forest with several hiking routes that are color-coded, so it's best to find a route that suits you.

Forêt Domaniale de la Coubre is accessible from nearby towns such as Royan, La Tremblade, and Saint-Palais-sur-Mer. The D25 road runs through the forest, as does cycle path number 4. There are several parking spots along the D25. Press a P on the map for directions to a parking. There are many trails to explore the forest.
