Valbonne Military Camp is characterized by alternating rocky steppes with low vegetation and small patches of scattered dry forests and bushes. This habitat is rare for the region. The main attraction is the numerous pairs of Bijeneter nesting in rabbit burrows on the ground (it is strictly forbidden to cross the fences to get close to the burrows). The first birds arrive on site in late April/early May. If you stand at the edge of the field, the Bijeneter are easy to spot from a short distance. It's best to arrive early in the morning, but all day long you can admire the bee-eaters hunting insects in flight for their offspring, resting on bare branches or electric wires. Other birds of note include Veldleeuwerik, Wielewaal, Grauwe Klauwier and Zwarte Specht.

Français: Ce biome particulier et rare pour la région, se caractérise par une alternance de steppes rocailleuses arborant une végétation basse et de petits ilôts de forets et buissons secs disséminés. La principale attraction du lieu sont les nombreux couples de guêpiers d'Europe qui nichent dans des terriers de lapins à même le sol (il est strictement interdit de franchir les clotures pour se rapprocher des terriers). Les premiers oiseaux arrivent sur site fin avril/début mai. Si on se poste à la lisière des champs, les guêpiers sont facilement observables à faible distance. Il est préférable d'arriver tôt le matin, mais toute la journée vous pouvez admirer le balais des guêpiers chassant les insectes en vol pour leur progéniture, se reposant sur des branches dénudées ou sur les fils électriques. Les autres oiseaux remarquables du lieu inclus l'Alouette des champs, le Loriot, la Pie Grièche écorcheur et le Pic Noir.

Valbonne Military Camp is located a few kilometers south of the village of Valbonne and easily accessible by train or by car. A parking lot (indicated on the map below), is located along the fenced-in fields, entering the field is strictly forbidden (military zone). The parking lot is located on a small path connecting Chemin de la Violette and Chemin du Milieu. The area is 30 min by car east from Lyon and 52 min by train from Lyon Gare Part-Dieu.
The proposed itinerary is a 2 km path making a loop from Chemin de la Violette to Chemin du milieu. The best way to explore the area without disturbing the birds, is by bike or on foot (bikes can be carried in train). Note: the area can be hot in summer and lacks real shadow spots.
