Beschrijving
Luitemaa Nature Reserve is a wetland complex on the south-western coast of Estonia that consists of diverse coastal and inland habitats including shallow sea, capes and islands, coastal meadows and reed-beds. The coastal meadows near Võiste have shallow waters that attract large amounts of dabbling ducks (Krakeend, Wilde Eend, Zomertaling, Smient, Wintertaling and so on), Bergeend and swans. The wide coastal meadows and lagoons are favored by geese. Most common are Grauwe Gans and Brandgans. Rarer gooses like Kolgans, Kleine Rietgans, Grote Canadese Gans, Roodhalsgans, Rotgans, Toendrarietgans and Taigarietgans are often found during migration.
The sandbanks and lagoons are great spots for wading birds. Most common breeding birds are Tureluur, Bontbekplevier, Scholekster, Goudplevier, Kievit, and Kemphaan. During migration Zwarte Ruiter, Kluut, Bonte Strandloper, Kleine Strandloper, Temmincks Strandloper, Kanoet, Krombekstrandloper, Wulp and Regenwulp have been recorded.
