Jerup Strand comprises a flat sandy beach with a single line of dunes, marshland and grazed meadows. It is situated on the shore of the Kattegat north of Frederikshavn. Several species of wader breed in the area, including Scholekster, Bontbekplevier, Tureluur and now and again Kluut.
Jerup is a stopover site for several duck species, including Smient and Wintertaling. During migrating season other birds arrive, including Middelste Zaagbek, Bergeend, Goudplevier, Zilverplevier, Bonte Strandloper, Kievit, Kanoet, Wulp and Kleine Strandloper. Now and again, flocks of Rotgans and Brandgans and a few Kleine Rietgans stage on the meadows. Grauwe Gans can be seen throughout the year.
In winter there are flocks of Drieteenstrandloper running along the sea’s edge, and one can be lucky enough to spot a Velduil over the meadows. Ruigpootbuizerd and Blauwe Kiekendief can also be seen flying over the meadows, together with flocks of Frater and Sneeuwgors. Small flocks of Strandleeuwerik and a few IJsgors appear now and then. Slechtvalk is a regular visitor.

Follow route 40 connecting Frederikshavn with Skagen. About 13km north of Frederikshavn one reaches the village of Jerup. Just north of the village, turn east along Fredborgvej (there is a sign to Jerup Strand). At the beach is a car park, from where one can get onto the beach. Most birds can usually be seen at the southern end of the area. Note: the area is privately owned but it is possible to park and walk along the beach. Click on the P in the map to get directions.
