Beschrijving
Borreby Mose is a large area with bog and reedbeds. Around the bog are extensive meadows used for grazing. Despite attempts to drain and cultivate, today the site is protected under Natura 2000 and serves as a vital refuge for birds. The reedbeds host breeding Roerdomp, Bruine Kiekendief, Baardman, Rietzanger, Kleine Karekiet and occasionally rarities like Snor and Grote Karekiet. The wet meadows, shallow pools and muddy edges attract many waders and meadow-birds like Grutto, Kemphaan, Kievit, Tureluur, Scholekster, Bontbekplevier, and Kluut.
During migration thousands of geese roost in the area, joined by ducks like Pijlstaart, Slobeend, Wintertaling and Kuifeend. Winter brings Nonnetje, Brilduiker, and Blauwe Kiekendief. A regular resident is Zeearend. Less common birds that visit Borreby Mose include Reuzenstern and Grauwe Franjepoot. Every year rarities turn up in the area, especially during migration. For example Gestreepte Strandloper and Zwarte Ooievaar have been observed.
