Beschrijving

The Shashe Dam is a dam on the Shashe River in Botswana. The artificial lake is 15 kilometres long and up to 4.2 kilometres wide. The water is shallow so has many ducks, herons and other water birds. The edges of the dam are also shallow and have waders. It is more like a lake than a dam. The surrounding area is mainly thornveldt, but the patches of Miombo woodland have birds normally seen further east.

I have seen quite a few rarities in this spot including Osprey, Caspian Tern, Eurasian Nightjar and African Rail. As it is not well birded there are probably many more birds to be discovered. In spring you can see at least 100 species in 4 hours.

Toegang

Shashe Dam is located on the Shashe River in northeastern Botswana, about 24 kilometers of Francistown. From Francistown travel southwest on the main road for 24 km then turn right onto a dirt road, go past the village and then turn right before the gate and a few houses onto a dirt track. Follow the track until it reaches the end of a fence and then turn left and immediately left and follow the track to the dam wall.
