The controlled tides of the Scheldt river give this birding spot some interesting characteristics. As the Bergenmeersen is quite far inland the brackish water and the tidal movement shape this area in a unique salt marsh and mudflats. During migration periods these mudflats attract wader birds like Grutto , Kluut , Oeverloper , Groenpootruiter , Zwarte Ruiter , Bosruiter , Bonte Strandloper. On the wooden path that runs trough the area it's possible to see Buidelmees and Baardman in the reed beds (mostly during winter). Warblers like Sprinkhaanzanger , Blauwborst , Rietzanger and Kleine Karekiet are easily to be heard from this wooden path during spring and early summer.
