The coastal bushlands and craggy mountains of Wilsons Promontory National Park are home to an abundance of birds. In the grasslands and grassy woodlands you might spot the sapphire wing plumage of the Blue-winged Parrot. In the coastal heathlands you can find the shy Ground Parrot and in the mountain Gang Gang Cockatoos. Wilsons Promontory National Park is also home to a variety of bush birds including the Olive Whistler, Beautiful Firetail, Southern Emuwren, Crescent Honeyeater, Forest Raven, Bassian Thrush, Flame Robin, Ground Parrot and sea birds like waders, ducks and terns, Hooded Plover and Pied Oystercatcher.
This popular 10 km hike from Lilly Pilly Gully to the rocky summit of Mount Bishop rewards you with spectacular panoramic views of the west coast. Birds you can observe during this hike are Yellow-tailed Black-Cockatoo, Gang-gang Cockatoo, Australian King-Parrot, Crimson Rosella, Superb Fairywren, Brown Gerygone, Olive Whistler, Eastern Spinebill, Crescent Honeyeater, Forest Raven, Bassian Thrush and in summer Flame Robin. The forest is made up mostly of stringy bark trees and once you get closer to the top you'll find yourself atop amazing granite outcrops.

Wilsons Promontory National Park is approximately three hours drive from Melbourne. Follow the Monash Freeway (M1) to join the South Gippsland Freeway (M420/A440) to Meeniyan. Take the Meeniyan- Promontory Road (C444) to the Wilsons Promontory Entrance. Tidal River Visitor Centre is 30 km south of the park entrance. Wilsons Promontory National Park is free for day-use visitors. There is no fuel at Tidal River. The closest fuel outlet is at Yanakie. Note that it can get extremely busy in Wilsons Promontory over summer and there is a limit to the number of vehicles that can be in the national park. On busy summer days it can be challenging to park, so consider visiting the area on a weekday during summer.
To walk the Mount Bishop trail, you can park in the Lilly Pilly Gully parking. Click on the P in the map for directions. The walk up to the Mount Bishop summit gives you panoramic views of Wilsons Promontory and the surrounding islands. This 10 km walk takes you along the Lilly Pilly Gully Track around the south eastern base of Mount bishop and then winds its way up to the summit. Make sure to bring some sturdy shoes for your trip and don't forget a bottle of water and a bite to eat at the summit. If you don't want to do the climb to Mount Bishop or want to do a shorter walk, you can choose to only walk the Lilly Pilly Gully Track (6 km).
