A beautiful 6 km circular walk amongst subtropical rainforest and 600-year-old trees in Dorrigo National Park. More than 150 bird species have been recorded.
Dorrigo National Park is recognised for its exceptional natural beauty with significant habitats of outstanding value to science and conservation. The dense forest is the ideal habitat for birds. The 6 km Wonga Walk is one of the most popular walks in Dorrigo National Park and great for birding. Tall, lush rainforest provides a cool and shaded walking track and you also pass the cascading Tristania Falls and Crystal Shower Falls. You walk along 600-year-old trees on an elevated boardwalk and hear bird calls everywhere. Among the birds you can observe are Australian Brushturkey, Satin Bowerbird, Regent Bowerbird, Wompoo Fruit-Dove, Superb Lyrebird, Wonga Pigeon, Noisy Pitta, Green Catbird and Australian King-Parrot.
The Wonga Walk starts at the Dorrigo Rainforest Centre in the western precinct of Dorrigo National Park. To get there From Armidale: Drive east along the Waterfall Way for approximately 90 minutes. Turn left into Dome Road approximately 2 km after you pass through Dorrigo.
From Coffs Harbour: Travel south along the Pacific Highway. After crossing the Bellinger River, take the Waterfall Way exit to Dorrigo via Bellingen. Turn right at Dome Road and continue for approximately 1.6 km to the Dorrigo Rainforest Centre. Parking is available at Dorrigo Rainforest Centre, including several designated disabled spots. Click on the P in the map for directions or coordinates.
Start your walk at the Dorrigo Rainforest Centre, and take Lyrebird link track for 400m before joining Wonga walk. There are some steeper sections along the walk, a few steps and some boulder crossings, but you can break the walk up into shorter sections.
Don't forget to check out the Skywalk lookout near the Dorrigo Rainforest Centre. This is a 70m boardwalk that soars over the edge of the escarpment some 21m above the rainforest. Perched right on the edge of the escarpment, the views take in Bellinger Valley to the coast with deep valleys and gorges, blanketed in a rich rainforest. You have a great view of the canopy. Look for Regent Bowerbird, Topknot Pigeon and Grey Goshawk.
