Reservoir that was created in 1860 as part of a scheme to improve the supply of drinking water to Edinburgh.
Harperrig Reservoir lies in the middle of a basin on the northwestern side of the Pentland Hills and is surrounded by marshy grassland. An island in the reservoir, called Gull island, provides a safe breeding habitat for gulls and wildfowl. Geese and ducks use the reservoir for wintering.
Harperrig Reservoir is located to the north of the Pentland Hills, 12 miles (19 km) south west of Edinburgh and 4 miles (6.4 km) south of Mid Calder. There is a car park on the west side of the reservoir. Click on the P in the map for directions.
