Description

Pelitözü Lake is a calm and accessible birding spot just outside Bilecik city centre. The area combines a freshwater lake, reedbeds, grassy edges, scattered trees and surrounding woodland, creating a variety of habitats that attract birds in all seasons.

The lake itself is home to waterbirds such as Mallard, Little Grebe, Coot and Grey Heron. During migration periods, the number of species increases, with birds like Great Crested Grebe, Common Teal and occasionally Cormorant using the lake as a resting stop. The surrounding trees and bushes hold species such as Great Tit, Blue Tit, Blackbird, Chaffinch and Greenfinch. In open areas around the lake, you may also spot White Wagtail and European Goldfinch.

What makes Pelitözü special is how easy and relaxed birding feels here. You can slowly walk around the lake, stop at viewpoints, and watch birds at close range. It’s an ideal place for beginners, photographers, or anyone looking for a peaceful birding session without long walks or difficult terrain.

Access

Pelitözü Lake is located about 7 km from Bilecik city centre and is well signposted. It is one of the most popular recreation areas in the region.

By car, the lake is very easy to reach, and there is a large parking area close to the shore. Parking is usually available throughout the day.

Public transport and minibuses run between Bilecik and Pelitözü, especially on weekends. From the bus stop, it is only a short walk to the lake.

The area is best explored on foot. A walking path circles much of the lake, allowing you to scan the water, reeds and trees comfortably. For birdwatching, allow 1–2 hours, though you can easily stay longer if bird activity is good.

Extra info

Early morning and late afternoon are the best times for birding, especially for waterbirds and reflections on the lake. In winter, the lake can host interesting overwintering species, while spring brings more movement and song from woodland birds.

There are cafés, picnic areas and benches nearby, making this a comfortable location for longer visits. The area is popular with walkers and families, but birding remains productive, especially away from the busiest picnic spots.
