In 1980 the lake and mountain of Ichkeul were declared UNESCO World Heritage Sites, then converted into a national park covering an area of 12 500 hectares. The vast body of water is the last trace of a chain of freshwater lakes that once stretched across North Africa. Over 200 bird species have been recorded in Ichkeul National Park and 500 plant species. November to February is the best time to visit. Among the birds you can spot in the area are розев фламинго, ќук, грлица, Laughing Dove, мало црноглаво грмушарче, голема пиштарка, сива пиштарка, блатна ластовица, Чурулин, орел змијар, Пупунец, пчеларка, степска ветрушка, осојад, Moussier's Redstart, белоглава патка, црн кожувар and жолто гушанче.
