Cheonsu Bay in Seosan City is arguably one of the best winter birding areas in Korea. Around 70% of the Hooded Crane population winters in this area.

Description

Cheonsu Bay (천수만) is a huge birding area where more than 260 species have been spotted. It is a wintering ground for numerous winter migrant birds including the Eurasian Black Vulture, White-tailed Eagle, Ruddy Shelduck, Greater White-fronted Goose, Tundra Bean Goose, Whooper Swan, Northern Shoveler, Oriental Stork, Eurasian Spoonbill, and Northern Lapwing. The most iconic species in this area is the Hooded Crane, with around 70% of its population wintering in this place. You can also observe smaller numbers of White-naped Crane, Common Crane, Sandhill Crane, and Siberian Crane.

Access

Cheonsu Bay is located on the west coast of South Korea, along the Yellow Sea. Mainly around Seosan-si and stretching toward Taean-gun. Cheonsu Bay is accessible by car. It is a huge area so exploring on foot is not recommended. It is a very popular birding area so you can also take a guided birding tour.
