Saltmarsh area right on the edge of city of Olhão. Very rich in waders/aquatic birds, especially in winter. Great spot to see розев фламинго up close.

Access

The saltpans are situated in the saltmarshes. Once you've parked you can easily enter the area walking or cycling and explore every saltpan that is accessible (some are blocked or there is no way to access without getting kneedeep in the mud). In the northern ones you will find ducks such as the гусковидна патка, Дива патка and сива патка, whereas closer to the lagoon (sea side) you'll find more waders such as the обичен свиркач, бел свиркач, белокрстен свиркач, морски пескар, среден пескар, шарен српоклун свиркач and Црвенонога сабјарка. A bit further way from the access, to the east, it is very common to find groups of розев фламинго that allow bystanders to get quite close.

Comments & Tips

San (2022-12-02)

Very good place for watching waders and орел рибар. Best time of day about 2 hours after high tide. When water gets lower the birds spread out so they are further away then.

Geo Bakker (2024-10-12)

Top location. Many waders.

Philip Grunshaw (2024-10-20)

Also морски пескар, касписка рибарка, Синогушка, мало црноглаво грмушарче, тенкоклун галеб, мал свиркач seen on 17th October.

René Janssen (2025-02-07)

Currently (February 2025) less interesting since a huge building is being constructed. This disturbs the wildlife seriously.
