Description

Böön Tsagaan Nuur is a saline lake located at the foot of the Gobi-Altai Mountain Range. It's part of a chain of lakes in a vast inter-mountain depression between the Khangai and Gobi-Altai ranges. The lake is very rich in birds, some in large numbers. An estimated 1,000 White-winged Tern were present, distributed among four or five flocks, which sometimes gathered together. We spent most of our time on the eastern shore. We encountered Pallas's Fish-Eagle in the eastern part of the southern shore. We didn't find Relict Gull.

Other birds observed include Black-headed Gull, Common Tern, Northern Pintail, Red-crested Pochard, Common Pochard, Whooper Swan, Great Cormorant, Common Redshank, Mongolian Gull, Great Crested Grebe, Red-necked Phalarope, Great Egret, Asian Dowitcher, Black-tailed Godwit (melanuroides), Western Marsh Harrier, Eastern Cattle-Egret, Garganey, Dunlin, Broad-billed Sandpiper, Whiskered Tern, Caspian Tern, Swan Goose, Avocet, Common Shelduck, Mallard, Eurasian Skylark, Horned Lark, Asian Short-toed Lark, Temminck's Stint and Common Swift.
