Description
Riserva Naturale Lago di Montepulciano is a small shallow lake which reaches a maximum depth of three meters. The lake is surrounded by fields and patches of forest and on the western side of the lake there are reed beds. Italiano: Situata nella Valdichiana Senese, a confine con l’Umbria, la Riserva Naturale del Lago di Montepulciano tutela un prezioso mosaico di ambienti umidi di rilevante interesse naturalistico. Si estende su una superficie di 453 ettari e ricade all’interno dell’omonimo, che ha confini pressoché coincidenti. Lo specchio d’acqua – che raggiunge una profondità massima di tre metri – e i canneti presenti sul lato occidentale del bacino, occupano una superficie quasi equivalente (rispettivamente 170 e 167 ettari). Vari nuclei di vegetazione igrofila forestale e piccole superfici a prato umido completano il quadro degli habitat presenti. Il Canale Maestro della Chiana costituisce il principale immissario e l’unico emissario del Lago, collegando l’area protetta con la Zona di Protezione Speciale. Le due aree umide rappresentano oggi le ultime testimonianze delle estese paludi presenti in Valdichiana prima delle grandi opere di bonifica iniziate in epoca rinascimentale.

The area is easily accessible by car. Just follow the road signs to the visitor centre or click on the P in the map to get directions. Also the whole region invites for bike rides.

The paths through the reed and around the lake are openly accessible. But the small path through the reed leading to the observation hut is charged with 5 € per person.
