Description
The shallow river Tsiknias flows to the sea east of Skala Kallonis. It is one of the larger rivers on Lesvos and a major migration corridor. Its mouth attracts waders, gulls and terns. Egrets, herons and storks and many songbirds can be found along its length and in the surrounding fields. Among the birds that you can encounter in the area are пчеларка (they breed in the sandy river banks), славејче, црноглава стрнарка, Пупунец, лисеста гусковидна патка, гусковидна патка, патка крецка, Црвенонога сабјарка, морски пескар, мал пескар, голем српоклун свиркач, речна тринга, зеленонога тринга, мала чигра, белобрада рибарка, белокрила рибарка, речна чигра, тенкоклуна чигра, црн штрк and many more. The Tsiknias river is easy accessible from Skala Kallonis. It is less than a 1 km walk. If you arrive by car you can park along the road and explore the area on foot. Click on the P in the map for directions.
