A mosaic of grasslands, wetlands and forest allows for great birding alongside the river Elbe right in Germany's second largest city.
The wildlife sanctuaries of "Die Hohe" and "Die Reit" lay right next to each other and attract a great variety of bird species. Furthermore they harbour some of the biggest populations of Crested Newt and Tree Frog in northern Germany. The area can be covered quite quickly but surprises linger everywhere, including rare geese, scarce waders, a great variety of raptors and woodpeckers and beautiful songbirds.
The area can easily be reached by car from either the east (leave A25 at HH-Allermöhe) or from the west (Ochsenwerder Norderdeich). The parking spaces are sparse, but usually it's possible to find a space on the roadside of Reitdeich. You can reach it by bike similarly. Reaching the place by metro is a little more complicated, one has to take the S2/S21 to "Mittlerer Landweg" then one of the buses to "Allermöher Kirche" or leave at "Tiefstack" then drive to "Reitdeich".
You can either stay on the paved dike, where you'll already see most of the interesting species or head into/around the forest of "Die Reit" which is only possible by narrow dirt tracks in bad condition, which may occasionally be flooded.
