These former backwaters of the river Semois are now a nice wetland for the observation of waterbirds and forest birds.
Les Abattis is a small nature reserve of 40 hectares. The site is recognized as a Special Zone of Preservation in the European Natura 2000 network. The site is not far from the current bed of the river Semois. Work on developing and straightening the bed of the Semois in the 19th century caused this oxbow lake to form which is now fed by springs. The area has hay meadows, wet meadows, reed beds, woodlands, plantations of conifers and poplars and the centre is occupied by a still flooded backwater. Many types of birds can be found here. Among the birds you can encounter are ducks, herons, кукавица, саријазма, мал клукајдрвец, рибарче, зимовка, дебелоклун црешар, елова зелентарка, обично страче and if you are very lucky црн штрк.

The nature reserve of Abattis is located in Lorraine, between the villages of Sainte-Marie and Villers-sur-Semois.
