Shallow estuary of the Glenelg River Mouth, surrounding Livingstone island. Greater Crested Tern rookery. Long ocean beach.
The shallow estuary of the Glenelg River Mouth is located in Nelson in south-west Victoria. A trail leads to a boardwalk through saltmarshes and a bird hide. A lookout allows birders to have a better view over the birds resting in the shallows and on the sandbars. Among the birds you can encounter are Greater Crested Tern, Red-necked Stint, Red-capped Plover, Bar-tailed Godwit, Australian Pelican, Eastern Bristlebird, Pied Oystercatcher and Sooty Oystercatcher.
Livingstone Island is in the south western most corner of Victoria, not too far from the town of Nelson. Sealed road access. A 3 km looped route begins and ends from the end of Beach Road, where parking is available next to Estuary Beach. Click on the P in the map for directions or coordinates. The trail itself is a wide grassy track that features a boardwalk over the top of the salt marshes and several viewing platforms and bird hides along the way.
