Protected 56-hectare nature reserve with gum trees and urban creeks that surrounds the Field of Mars cemetery in Ryde.
Dry eucalypt woodland covers much of the Field of Mars Reserve. This vegetation is typical of the dry, infertile sandstone soils found in Sydney’s north. Despite being only 56 hectares in size, the reserve contains around 300 species of plants. These plants support an array of birds. Among the birds you can encounter are Tawny Frogmouth, Crimson Rosella, Australian King-Parrot, Rainbow Lorikeet, Red-browed Finch, Laughing Kookaburra, Superb Fairywren, Spotted Pardalote and Sulphur-crested Cockatoo.
The Field of Mars Reserve is a located on the northern suburbs of Sydney. The looped route of 4 km indicated on the map begins and ends from the parking area off Pittwater Road, near the Field of Mars Environmental Education Visitors Centre in the suburb of East Ryde. Click on the P in the map for directions or coordinates.
The Visitors Centre can be found in the Field of Mars off Pittwater Road. Parking is available in the carpark at the front. Volunteers open the centre each Saturday and Sunday.
