Descrizione

Elsie Roemer Bird Sanctuary is dedicated to the memory of Elsie Roemer, a resident of Alameda who passionately advocated for conserving this stretch of shoreline, which was slated for development in the 1970's. This small sanctuary includes a pickleweed marsh, mudflat, beach, and shoreline habitat that serves as foraging and roosting area for a wide variety of shorebirds, with numerous water birds visible out on the bay. The reserve lies at the east end of Crown Memorial Beach, at the corner of Broadway and Shore Line Drive. It includes a boardwalk pier for viewing birds.

In the appropriate season, this reserve is a great place for migrating shorebirds in winter, such as Marbled Godwit, Long-billed Curlew, Western Sandpiper, Least Sandpiper, Dunlin, Sanderling, Black-bellied Plover, Semipalmated Plover, Black Oystercatcher, Long-billed Dowitcher and Greater Yellowlegs, plus a variety of herons, ducks, grebes, loons, terns, gulls and more. The Seawall to the West that separates the reserve from the beach is a good area for viewing roosting cormorants, terns, gulls, oystercatchers and more. If you're lucky, you might see less common birds such as Red Knot, Ruddy Turnstone on the shore, or see Black Skimmers or Least Terns flying out over the bay. This is also a good place to scan roosting shorebird flocks at high tide.
