From August to October, numerous thermal gliding birds can be observed passing through the skies around Gurten. The best time is late August and early September. Then large numbers of Falco pecchiaiolo are possible. With a bit of luck, Cicogna nera will also pass by. Other regular species are: Poiana, Sparviere, Astore, Gheppio, Lodolaio, Nibbio reale, Nibbio bruno, Falco pescatore, Albanella minore, Falco di palude and Cicogna bianca. In later autumn large flocks of Colombaccio pass by. From time to time Rondone maggiore can be observed on food flights.

The Gurten hill is located directly south of Bern city center. The best way is to take the Gurtenbahn funicular that runs from the city to the Gurten. From there it is only a 10 minutes walk to the viewing and observation point.
