Lake Sommen is quite deep and most of the lake is ice-free all-winter. During this period large amounts of Smergo maggiore, Quattrocchi and Svasso maggiore winter in Sommen. Sometimes in the hundreds. Among these Moretta, Cigno reale, Cigno selvatico, Folaga, and Gavina can often be found. The lake is also home to quite a few rarer wintering birds like Strolaga mezzana, Smergo minore, Aquila reale, Orchetto marino, Orco marino, Martin pescatore, Strolaga minore and Gabbiano comune.
During the spring migration marine ducks can be found in the lake. At the same time Strolaga minore, and Strolaga mezzana, arrive at the lake. Strolaga mezzana breeds in the lake while Strolaga minore feeds in the lake and breeds in small neighbouring lakes. The rare Strolaga beccogiallo has been seen. Sommen archipelago hosts large colonies of Sterna comune, Gavina, Gabbiano comune, Gabbiano reale nordico, Airone cenerino and Cormorano. Among these some rare birds like Zafferano, and Sterna codalunga can be seen.
The large decidous forests around sommen especially on Torpön host plenty of quite rare birds like: Pigliamosche pettirosso, Picchio rosso minore, Nocciolaia, and Gufo comune. Around Sommen there is also old conifer forests around which support large populations of woodpeckers. Torcicollo, Picchio verde, Picchio nero, Picchio rosso minore, Picchio tridattilo (very rare), Picchio rosso maggiore and Picchio dorsobianco (extinct in the area) have all been recorded. Other otherwise rare forrest birds found here are: Francolino di monte Gallo cedrone, Fagiano di monte (Rocks mosse), and Nocciolaia.
During the autumn birds can be seen migrating through the lake. Most common are the doves, finches, terns, and waders. At Rocks mosse Fagiano di monte and Gallo cedrone breed. At Visskvarn there are rapids where Merlo acquaiolo, and Ballerina gialla can be seen.
