At Sandarviken 223 bird species have been recorded. 35 species of wading birds have been recorded.
Sandarviken holds thousands of wintering Moretta grigia but Orco marino, Orchetto marino, Edredone and diving ducks also winter in smaller numbers. Other waterfowl like Fischione, Mestolone Alzavola, Volpoca and Canapiglia also winter in the area. Sandarviken holds wintering Svasso maggiore, Svasso collorosso, and Svasso cornuto.Oca facciabianca also winter as do a few wading birds in winter. Frullino is sometimes found. Wintering birds of prey are often found in the area. Some of the common ones are Albanella reale, Poiana, Aquila di mare, and Aquila reale.
During migration period the bay often holds large amounts of waders. Most numerous is the Piovanello pancianera which sometimes number in the thousands. Pittima reale, Beccaccino, Beccaccia di mare, Chiurlo maggiore, Pettegola, Piovanello pancianera, Avocetta, and Corriere grosso all breed somewhat regularly. Other wading birds often found are:Voltapietre, Pivieressa, Pittima minore, Piovanello tridattilo, Gambecchio nano, and Gambecchio comune. Rarer wading birds like Gambecchio frullino, Falaropo beccosottile, Frullino and Croccolone are sometimes found. Many vagrant wading birds have also been found.
In the lagoon Canapiglia, Mestolone, Marzaiola and many other dabbling ducks often Feed. Strolaga minore and Strolaga mezzana often rest at Sandarviken year round. Large amounts of geese use the coastal meadows as resting and feeding ground during their migration. Oca facciabianca and Oca selvatica can sometimes be found in the thousands. Oca zamperosee and Oca collorosso has been seen.
