Just outside the village of Vegas Altas extensive rice fields start. The fields receive important winter concentrations of Gru and several species of waders like Pittima reale, Corriere grosso, Cavaliere d'Italia, Piviere dorato, Gambecchio comune, Pantana, Combattente, Piovanello pancianera, Piro piro piccolo, Piro piro culbianco, Beccaccino and Piro piro boschereccio. During the migratory passages, you can also see other wintering birds such as Pettazzurro, Spioncello or Migliarino di palude. Other birds you can spot in the area are Averla meridionale, Bengalino comune, Astrilde di Sant'Elena and Upupa. Also many wintering birds of prey (sometimes in high densities) like Falco di palude, Albanella reale, Nibbio reale, Nibbio bianco, Smeriglio and Gufo di palude. Best times for a visit are winter and spring, from November to May. From June to October it can be very quiet on the fields.
