Confluence of the rivers Guadiaro and Genal

Cadiz province, Andalucia  >  Spain

It is located inland, along the border with the province of Malaga. It could be a typical river in the south of Spain but has some special characteristics.

Descrizione

It is a river landscape surrounded by cultivated fields. The Guadiaro river always has plenty of water and, in spring and summer, a small dam is built to use the water, to irrigate upstream. However, the Genal river, which comes from the Ronda mountains, usually has little water in spring and summer. Downstream from the point where both rivers meet, the riverbed is a series of small streams and ponds, pebbles and riverside and shrub vegetation. This set, with many different habitats, also attracts a great variety of birds.

In the river, you can find several species of herons such as Airone cenerino, Airone guardabuoi or, with luck, Sgarza ciuffetto and Nitticora, and in the surroundings, Airone guardabuoi. It's a good place to look for Torcicollo and Falco pescatore, especially in winter. During the migration periods you can see a great variety of passerines such as warblers, thrushes, pipits and wagtails, and it is not difficult to find Assiolo. Among the species that can be seen all year round, or almost all year round, are Martin pescatore, Corriere piccolo and Ballerina gialla, which all breed there, Piro piro piccolo or Piro piro culbianco. The most interesting migratory species, which breed here, and also can be see in migration, are Canapino pallido occidentale, Succiacapre collorosso, Tortora selvatica, Cuculo or Rigogolo. In the nearby areas breed Monachella and Averla capirossa, and it's easy to see birds of prey such as Poiana, Aquila minore or Biancone. Gufo reale lives very close to here although it is easier to hear than to see. If the wind is adequate, you can see migration of soaring birds, swallows and swifts.
