Descrizione

The Slovak Karst (Slovenský kras) is one of the mountain ranges of the Slovenské Rudohorie Mountains in the Carpathians in southern Slovakia. It consists of a complex of huge karst plains and plateaus. On 1 March 2002 Slovak Karst National Park was declared. The park is defined by hilly gorges and woodlands with deciduous trees. It is the rocky, forested areas that attract many of the birds to the area. Birds that can be spotted in the Slovak Karst National Park include Cicogna nera, Falco pecchiaiolo, Picchio dorsobianco, Codirossone, Aquila imperiale and Biancone.

Zádielska dolina (Zadiel Canyon), is a 4 km long gorge in the Slovak Karst with remarkable rock formations and small waterfalls, in places the cliffs are 300 metres tall. The narrowest part of the gorge is only 10 m wide. On a circular walk through the gorge and back over the Zádielská Plateau you can encounter birds like Aquila imperiale, Cicogna nera, Merlo acquaiolo, Ballerina gialla, Cuculo, Tortora selvatica, Rigogolo, Averla piccola, Usignolo, Pigliamosche pettirosso, Balia dal collare and more than 7 species of woodpecker!

Accesso

Zádielska Valley is located in the southeastern part of the Slovak Karst just behind the tourist village of Zadiel. An educational 3,5 km trail through the gorge starts behind the village of Zadiel. But best is to make a circular walk (about 9 km long, see the map) where you first explore the gorge on the educational trail and then walk on and explore the Zádielská Plateau where the gorge is visible from above from several nice viewpoints. You can park near the entrance of the gorge or in the village of Zadiel.
