Morii Lake

Bucuresti  >  Romania

Artificial lake where you can see more than 150 species year-round. Don't limit a visit to its concrete shores. Take a walk on Dambovita, towards Chiajna too.

Descrizione

Morii Lake is called "Lacul Morii" by locals (would translate as "the mill's lake"). Although it's an artificial lake, on Morii Lake you can find lots of cool species. Some of which only get to Romania accidentally, in winter: like Strolaga maggiore, Moretta codona, Pesciaiola or Gobbo rugginoso. Other birds you can encounter are Cavaliere d'Italia, Marangone minore, Svasso maggiore, Gruccione, Mignattaio, Garzetta, Airone rosso, etc.

The lake is surrounded by blockhouses, abandoned grassfields, some houses and has a sort of post-industrial vibe. Sometimes you can even see a few sheep. There are reeds, bushes, some trees (especially towards Chiajna). You can see all sorts of passerines and waterfowl. Winter and spring migration are the best seasons for Morii Lake.

Accesso

Morii Lake is located northwest of the center of Bucharest. You can get there easy by car or by subway (Crângași station). If you arrive by car you can park somewhere along the sidewalk. There is a lot to walk on foot on the lake's concrete shore, towards Chiajna, along the river. The area improved lately, but I recommend you don't walk there alone (stray dogs attacks history).

Wear a hat and sunscreen if you visit in summer. It's best to go early in the morning, if so. Don't forget to take food and water with you. You can also explore the area by bike, but walking is better for birding.
