Descrizione
The harbour of Funchal is a fairly large harbour and is mainly used for tourists and as a stopover for ships that want to cross the Atlantic Ocean. The area provides an ideal roosting habitat for many species of shorebird, like Gabbiano reale, Zafferano and Gabbiano comune. The shoreline is used by many species of wader, like Chiurlo piccolo, Voltapietre, Piovanello tridattilo and Piro piro piccolo.
The harbour waters are a feeding area for multiple species of tern, being mainly Sterna comune and Sterna di Dougall, but sometimes also Beccapesci.
Just outside the harbour and onto the Atlantic Ocean, large flocks of Berta maggiore can be observed. Small numbers of Berta di Bulwer can be seen too. Other species of shearwater can be seen during migration, like Berta minore atlantica and Berta della Macaronesia.
In the last decades, many species of rare migratory birds have been observed in this harbour, like Gavina americana, Gabbiano islandico and, in 2011, a Nitticora violacea.
