Descrizione

The San is one of the lesser-known rivers of Poland. Yet, it's one of those that haven't been changed and regulated as much as larger and more widely known rivers. It's home to ~30 species of fish (i.e. nase, common barbel, river trout) that provide sufficient diet base for many species of piscivorous birds.

In case of river/water biotope-dependant species, year-round, there can be found many Germano reale,, Gabbiano comune, Gabbiano reale pontico, Martin pescatore, Airone cenerino and Airone bianco maggiore. There is a good chance to see some Cigno reale, Alzavola, Smergo maggiore, Gallinella d'acqua, Folaga, Corriere piccolo, Piro piro piccolo, Gavina, Sterna comune, Aquila di mare, Ballerina bianca, Ballerina gialla and Cannaiola verdognola during spring and summer.

Some species that can be seen time to time or during migrations are: Oca selvatica, Marzaiola, Mestolone, Canapiglia, Fischione, Codone, Moriglione, Moretta tabaccata, Moretta, Quattrocchi, Tuffetto, Svasso maggiore, Porciglione, Pavoncella, Piovanello pancianera, Beccaccino, Piro piro culbianco, Pantana, Piro piro boschereccio, Pettegola, Mignattino comune, Mignattino piombato, Strolaga minore, Strolaga mezzana, Cicogna nera, Cicogna bianca, Cormorano, Tarabusino, Nitticora, Falco pescatore, Pendolino and others.

It's worth to note wintering water-assiociated species diversity and numbers, especially in case of Smergo maggiore, Quattrocchi and Cigno reale. Winter is also a great time to seek rare or generally uncommon in the area species, such as Moretta grigia, Pesciaiola, Smergo minore or loons/divers. Often, mixed groups of swans, ducks, grebes and gulls are found. Some predatory species that can be seen during migrations or flying by are: Falco pescatore, Falco pecchiaiolo, Aquila anatraia minore, Aquila reale, Falco di palude, Albanella reale, Albanella minore, Sparviere (also local), Astore, Nibbio bruno, Aquila di mare (mainly local), Poiana calzata, Poiana, Gheppio (also local), Falco cuculo, Lodolaio and Falco pellegrino. There are also some local Allocco and Gufo comune.

Banks are covered by trees in general, although quite "loosely". These woods are home to many species of passerines and other birds, such as: Piccione selvatico, Colombaccio, Tortora dal collare, Cuculo, Picchio rosso mezzano, Picchio rosso maggiore, Picchio rosso minore, Picchio cenerino, Picchio verde, Picchio nero, Rigogolo, Ghiandaia, Gazza, Taccola, Cornacchia grigia, Corvo imperiale, Cincia mora, Cincia bigia, Cincia alpestre, Cinciarella, Cinciallegra, Canapino maggiore, Luì grosso, Luì piccolo, Codibugnolo, Capinera, Bigiarella, Regolo, Picchio muratore, Rampichino alpestre, Rampichino comune, Scricciolo, Storno, Tordo bottaccio, Merlo, Cesena, Pigliamosche, Pettirosso, Passera Europea, Passera mattugia, Fringuello, Frosone, Verdone, Cardellino and Verzellino.
