Descrizione

In 1992, Panama created Coiba National Park, encompassing over 1,042 square miles of islands, forests, beaches, mangroves and coral reefs, and in July 2005, Unesco declared it a World Heritage Site.

The park includes Coiba island, 38 smaller islands off the southwest coast of Panama. The park has been designated an Important Bird Area (IBA) by BirdLife International because it supports significant populations of Coiba Spinetail, Brown-backed Doves and Three-wattled Bellbird which are all endemic this region.

You can also spot other species like Yellow-headed Caracara, Boat-billed Flycatcher, Brown Booby and Blue-throated Goldentail. And you are lucky you will also see the Coiba Island howler, a monkey which also endemic to the island.

The surrounding marine areas within the Gulf of Chiriquí providing protection for coral reefs, humpback whales, pilot whales, killer whales, dolphins, sea turtles, manta rays, marlins and other marine creatures.

Accesso

Coiba Island is located off the southwest coast of Panama, in the Gulf of Chiriquí. To reach Coiba Ranger Station you need to go by boat from Santa Catalina on the mainland. On the trip there and back you will spot many seabirds. Once you reach the island, it is possible do a fairly strenuous hike to the top of a hill. Once you reach the top the view is stunning and you will spot many forest birds along the way.
