Surfplas - Reeuwijksche Plassen

The "Surfplas" is the largest lake of the Reeuwijksche Plassen and is a very important area for waterfowl. Especially in winter, large numbers of waterfowl can be found here of which Fischione is the most numerous. Numbers can go up to 100.000 individuals! Other species that can be present in large numbers are Moriglione, Moretta and Alzavola. Small groups of Fistione turco can be found near the shore in the central part of the lake. Above the deeper parts of the lake, groups of Quattrocchi and Smergo maggiore are present. Also Pesciaiola can be present in small numbers. Often, scarce species can be found within these large groups of waterfowl, like Orchetto marino, Orco marino and Moretta tabaccata. Besides ducks, swans en geese make use of the area as resting habitat at night. Sometimes the large numbers of waterfowl can be restless when predators are present, like Falco pescatore.

Besides ducks, geese and swans, many other waterfowl are present in the area. Good numbers of Svasso piccolo can be present near the shore in the central part of the area. Also Tuffetto can be found here and sometimes Svasso collorosso and Svasso cornuto are discovered. Divers are sometimes found between the large numbers of waterfowl, like Strolaga minore and Strolaga maggiore. In the central part of the lake, near the shore, small parts are fallen dry and attracts waders of all kinds, like Piovanello pancianera, Piovanello comune and Pantana. Flocks of Pavoncella, Chiurlo maggiore and Combattente can be seen passing overhead towards the surrounding pastures.

Gulls and terns make use of the area to rest and forage for food. Large groups of Mignattino comune gather here in early spring just before leaving towards their breeding grounds inland. Sometimes, a single Mignattino piombato or Mignattino alibianche can be seen within these groups. Sterna comune uses the area to hunt and take their prey towards their breeding grounds on the islands in surrounding lakes. Gabbiano comune and Gavina als breed on these islands and rest in large groups on the "Surfplas". Small numbers of Gabbiano corallino also breed between them and can pass overhead. In early spring, small numbers of Gabbianello can be seen above the lake. Large gulls rest on the wooden pillars in the lake and sometimes Mugnaiaccio, Gabbiano reale pontico and Gabbiano reale can be found here.

In several surrounding areas, large reedbeds are present and being used by many species of reedbirds. One of the most peculiar species is the Usignolo di fiume, which can be found in larger numbers around the lake. Many common species like Forapaglie comune and Cannaiola breed here and sometimes Forapaglie macchiettato and Salciaiola can be heard. If you're lucky, you'll hear a Porciglione or see a Tarabuso.

The surrounding pastures are used by large flocks of geese, like Oca facciabianca and Oca lombardella. Sometimes, a Oca collorosso can be found within these large flocks. The pastures and ditches also attract Airone bianco maggiore and waders, like Combattente and Pittima reale.

Nederlands: De "Surfplas" is het grootste meer van de Reeuwijksche Plassen en is een zeer belangrijk gebied voor watervogels. Vooral in de winter zijn hier grote aantallen watervogels te vinden, waarvan de Fischione het talrijkst is. Aantallen kunnen oplopen tot 100.000! Andere soorten die in grote aantallen aanwezig kunnen zijn, zijn Moriglione, Moretta en Alzavola. Kleine groepen Fistione turco zijn te vinden bij de kust in het centrale deel van het meer. Boven de diepere delen van het meer zijn groepen Quattrocchi en Smergo maggiore aanwezig. Ook Pesciaiola kan in kleine aantallen aanwezig zijn. Binnen deze grote groepen watervogels zijn vaak schaarse soorten te vinden, zoals Orchetto marino, Orco marino en Moretta tabaccata. Naast eenden maken ook zwanen en ganzen gebruik van het gebied als rustplaats 's nachts. Soms kunnen de grote aantallen watervogels onrustig zijn als er roofdieren aanwezig zijn, zoals Falco pescatore.

Naast eenden, ganzen en zwanen zijn er veel andere watervogels in het gebied aanwezig. Er kunnen grote aantallen Svasso piccolo aanwezig zijn nabij de oever in het centrale deel van het gebied. Ook Tuffetto is hier te vinden en soms worden Svasso collorosso en Svasso cornuto ontdekt. Tussen de grote aantallen watervogels worden soms duikers gevonden, zoals Strolaga minore en Strolaga maggiore. In het centrale deel van het meer, vlakbij de oever, zijn kleine delen drooggevallen en die trekken allerlei soorten steltlopers aan, zoals Piovanello pancianera, Piovanello comune en Pantana. GroepenPavoncella, Chiurlo maggiore en Combattente kunnen boven je hoofd naar de omliggende weiden trekken.

Meeuwen en sterns maken gebruik van het gebied om te rusten en voedsel te zoeken. Grote groepen Mignattino comune verzamelen zich hier in het vroege voorjaar net voordat ze vertrekken naar hun broedgebieden landinwaarts. Soms is binnen deze groepen een enkele Mignattino piombato of Mignattino alibianche te zien. Sterna comune gebruikt het gebied om te jagen en hun prooi mee te nemen naar hun broedplaatsen op de eilanden in de omliggende meren. Gabbiano comune en Gavina broeden ook op deze eilanden en rusten in grote groepen uit op de Surfplas. Kleine aantallen Gabbiano corallino broeden er ook tussen en kunnen overvliegen. In het vroege voorjaar zijn er kleine aantallen Gabbianello boven het meer te zien. Grote meeuwen rusten op de houten pilaren in het meer en soms zijn Mugnaiaccio, Gabbiano reale pontico en Gabbiano reale hier te vinden.

In verschillende omliggende gebieden zijn grote rietvelden aanwezig die door vele soorten rietvogels worden gebruikt. Usignolo di fiume, is in grote aantallen rond het meer te vinden is. Veel voorkomende soorten zoals Forapaglie comune en Cannaiola broeden hier en soms zijn Forapaglie macchiettato en Salciaiola te horen. Als je geluk hebt, hoor je een Porciglione of zie je een Tarabuso.

De omliggende weiden worden gebruikt door grote groepen ganzen, zoals Oca facciabianca en Oca lombardella. Soms is er een Oca collorosso tussente vinden. De weilanden en sloten trekken ook Airone bianco maggiore en steltlopers aan, zoals Combattente en Pittima reale.

Accesso

The area is easy accessable on foot and by bike. You can make a circular walk around the lake of about 7 km. You can park the car on the large parking lot on the western side of the lake. There's also a restaurant, showers and changing rooms for swimmers and surfers. The circular road is completely paved, except for a small part in the southwestern part. On the eastern and southern side of the lake a birdwatching hide is present from where the waterfowl is easy visible.

Nederlands: Het gebied is gemakkelijk te voet en met de fiets bereikbaar. Je kunt een rondwandeling maken rond het meer van ongeveer 7 km. Parkeren kan op de grote parkeerplaats aan de westkant van het meer. Er is ook een restaurant, douches en kleedkamers voor zwemmers en surfers. De rondweg is volledig verhard, op een klein stukje in het zuidwestelijke deel na. Aan de oost- en zuidkant van het meer is een vogelkijkhut aanwezig van waaruit de watervogels goed zichtbaar zijn.
