This old meander of the river Maas (Meuse) near the village of Haren is a nice area for a walk and some easy birding. The surrounding area has different types of habitats. There are pools, reed beds, willow groves and meadows on both sides of the dike. You can make a circular walk of about 4 kilometers. In the wetlands you have a chance to see birds like Tuffetto, Pettazzurro, Martin pescatore and many different types of ducks and other water birds. On the wet meadows on the south side you can see Chiurlo maggiore. On the extensively grazed and drier pastures on the north side you can see birds such as Gheppio, Cardellino and Saltimpalo and in winter you have a chance of Albanella reale. The Falco pellegrino breeds in the 135-meter-high communication tower that stands right next to the area and in the willow forests you can see a nesting colony of Airone cenerino from the dike. Sometimes Tarabuso can be seen from the dike.

Nederlands: De oude Maas meander bij het dorpje Haren en het omliggende gebied, heeft verschillende soorten leefgebieden, wat uiteraard weer verschillende soorten vogels aantrekt. Aan beiden zijden van de dijk liggen er plassen, rietkragen, wilgenbosjes en weilanden. Je kunt er een aardige wandeling van zo'n 4 kilometer maken. In de wetlands maak je kans op vogels als Tuffetto, Pettazzurro, Martin pescatore en veel verschillende soorten eenden en andere watervogels. Op de natte weilanden aan de zuidkant zie je soms Chiurlo maggiore. Op de extensief begraasde en drogere weilanden aan de noordkant zie je vogels als Gheppio, Cardellino en Saltimpalo en heb je in de winter (een kleine) kans op Albanella reale. In de 135 meter hoge communicatietoren die vlak naast het gebied staat, broedt de Falco pellegrino en in de wilgenbossen kun je vanaf de dijk een mooie kolonie broedende Airone cenerino zien. Soms wordt vanaf de dijk de Tarabuso gezien.
