The southern part of Koudenhoorn is a quiet area where nature and landscape values are paramount. It is not accessible during the breeding season (March 15 to July 15). The rest of the island is intended for recreation. The northern part has intensive daytime recreation and is less interesting for bird watching. The middle part is for extensive recreation and has many natural elements, shrubs, woodland and hedges and in terms of natural values is not inferior to the quiet area, partly due to the reed borders and fields. The total number of stretching meters of reed collar is even higher in the recreation area than in the quiet area. The southern area and the middle part are therefore attractive for many types of birds. See the bird list below. The island also has remnants of medieval forests and forest birds such as Allocco, Picchio rosso maggiore and Picchio muratore nest in those old trees.

Nederlands: Het 38 hectare grote eiland Koudenhoorn is in de tachtiger jaren volledig door mensenhanden ingericht. De verschillende landschapstypen trekken veel vogels aan. Het zuidelijke deel van Koudenhoorn is een stiltegebied waar natuur- en landschapswaarden voorop staan. Het is in de broedperiode niet toegankelijk (15 maart tot 15 juli). De rest van het eiland is bedoeld voor recreatie. Het noordelijke deel heeft intensieve dagrecreatie en is voor vogels kijken minder interessant. Het middendeel is voor extensieve recreatie en heeft vele natuurlijke elementen, ruigtes, hakhoutbosjes en hagen en doet qua natuurwaarden niet onder voor het stiltegebied, mede door de rietkragen en –velden. Het totaal aantal strekkende meters rietkraag is in het recreatiegebied zelfs hoger dan in het stiltegebied. Het zuidelijke gebied en het middendeel is dus aantrekkelijk voor veel soorten vogels. Zie de vogellijst beneden. Ook heeft het eiland restanten van Middeleeuwse bossen en in die oude bomen broeden bosvogels zoals Allocco, Picchio rosso maggiore en Picchio muratore.

The island of Koudenhoorn is not accessible to motorized traffic. Visitors park in the Gemeentehaven car park and walk over a bridge to the island. Click on the P in the map for directions to the parking lot. There are several cycling and hiking trails on the island itself.

Nederlands: Het eiland Koudenhoorn is niet toegankelijk voor gemotoriseerd verkeer. De bezoekers parkeren op het parkeerterrein de Gemeentehaven en lopen over een brug naar het eiland toe.
