The Groote Gat nature reserve consists of a large creek, surrounded by reed beds, shrubs, hedges, pollard trees and wet grassland. The brackish water and the surrounding grasslands and reed beds attract many different types of birds, from reed birds to meadow birds. Birds you may encounter are Spatola, Pantana, Beccaccino, Pettegola, Chiurlo maggiore, Piro piro culbianco, Pittima reale, Totano moro, Avocetta, Piro piro piccolo, Mestolone, Codone, Basettino, Pettazzurro and Falco di palude.

Nederlands: Natuurgebied Groote Gat bestaat uit een grote kreek, omringd door rietvelden, struiken, hagen, knotbomen en nat grasland. Het ligt ten zuiden van Oostburg in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen. Het krekengebied maakte ooit onderdeel uit van de Linie van Oostburg tijdens de Tachtigjarige Oorlog. Het brakke water en de daaromheen liggende graslanden en rietvelden trekken veel verschillende soorten vogels aan, van rietvogels tot weidevogels. Vogels die je kunt tegenkomen zijn Spatola, Pantana, Beccaccino, Pettegola, Chiurlo maggiore, Piro piro culbianco, Pittima reale, Totano moro, Avocetta, Piro piro piccolo, Mestolone, Codone, Basettino, Pettazzurro en Falco di palude.

The Groote Gat is located south of the village of Oostburg. You can park on the verge near the swing gate to the bird-watching hut on Nieuveltweg at number 54. Click on the P in the map for directions. From there you can walk to the bird hide. You can also cross the Groote Gat via a boardwalk from the Kaas and Broodsedijk. You can also partly overlook the area from the Kaas and Broodsedijk.

Nederlands: Het Groote Gat ligt ten zuiden van de plaats Oostburg. Parkeren kan in de berm bij het klaphek naar de vogelkijkhut aan de Nieuveltweg ter hoogte van nr 54. Klik op de P in de kaart voor een routebeschrijving. Van daaruit kun je naar de vogelkijkhut wandelen. Daarnaast kun je het Groote Gat dwars doorsteken via een vlonderpad vanaf de Kaas en Broodsedijk. Verder kun je het gebied ook deels goed overzien vanaf de Kaas en Broodsedijk.
