The circular walk described below will take you around the lake, and offers a lot of different habitats. You will find rough thickets, stony banks, mudflats, open water, floodplain vegetation, a small willow-poplar forest, the Waal river itself and beautiful views everywhere. In the spring, you will find,Sterpazzola, Saltimpalo, Usignolo and Canapino maggiore in the shrub and thicket near the beginning of the walk. A pair of Picchio verde has had a nest here for a number of years now.
During the right time of year (spring and autumn), the northern and east banks of the lake attract many different migrating birds, such as different subspecies of Cutrettola, Culbianco, but also Piro piro piccolo and Piro piro culbianco. Sometimes, the peninsula between the Waal and the lake attracts rarer species such as Merlo dal collare and Stiaccino, that occasionally touch down. Birds of prey such as Falco pescatore and Aquila di mare are regular passengers.
In the winter, the lake attracts a large number of wintering ducks. Quattrocchi, Smergo maggiore and Svasso maggiore hibernate in good numbers, and occasionally even rarer birds, like Orco marino or Strolaga maggiore are seen resting or hunting there. At the end of April, often on cloudy days, the entire lake can suddenly be full of Mignattino comune, Sterna comune and large groups of Gabbianello, resting on the water, or hunting for insects and little fish.
The Willow forest on the West Bank attracts species such as Pigliamosche in summer, and also bustles with Storno and different finch-family species. Martin pescatore uses the steep sandy banks between the water and the peninsula to breed and hunt.There is an outlook tower on the peninsula. It offers nice views of the area, but for birding the tower is not as interesting, due to its height.
With favourable water levels, the western and southern banks can become exposed in spring and autumn. When they are, waders likePantana, Pittima reale are regular guests. Funilly enough, a Piovanello maggiore is observed there at least once a year - a typical wader around the Wadden Sea, but very rare inland.

Nederlands: Het Grote Grindgat bij Weurt is een verrassend leuke plek om vogels te kijken vlakbij Nijmegen. Veel vogels weten deze plek te vinden in de winter en tijdens de trektijd. Het natuurgebied ligt rondom een groot meer met een industrieël verleden. Als je goed zoekt kun je nog ruïnes en andere restanten vinden. Met een simpele wandeling rondom het meer kom je in veel verschillende habitats terecht. Je vind er ruig struweel, stenige oevers, slikranden, open water, uiterwaardevegetatie, een klein wilgen- populierbos, de rivier de Waal en overal mooie uitzichten.
In het struweel vind je in de lente onder meer Sterpazzola, Saltimpalo , Usignolo en Canapino maggiore en er broedt al een aantal jaren een paartje Picchio verde.
De de noordelijke en oostelijke oever van het meer trekken in de goede tijd van het jaar (lente en herfst) veel verschillende doortrekkende vogels aan, zoals verschillende ondersoorten Cutrettola, Culbianco, maar ook Piro piro piccolo en Piro piro culbianco. Het schiereiland tussen de Waal en het meer trekt dan zeldzamere soorten aan als Merlo dal collare en Stiaccino, die af en toe invallen. Roofvogels als Falco pescatore en Aquila di mare vliegen soms over.
Het meer heeft in de winter een grote aantrekkingskracht op overwinterende eenden. Quattrocchi, Smergo maggiore en Svasso maggiore overwinteren in grote aantallen, en af en toe verblijft er wel eens een zeldzaamheid als Orco marino of Strolaga maggiore. Eind april, vaak op bewolkte dagen kan het hele meer opeens vol zitten met Mignattino comune, Sterna comune en grote groepen Gabbianello.
Het wilgenbos aan de westoever trekt soorten als Pigliamosche aan, en zit verder vol met spreeuwen en verschillende vinken. Martin pescatore gebruikt de oevers tussen de oever en het schiereiland om te broeden en jagen. Op het schiereiland staat een uitkijktoren. Die geeft een mooi uitzicht over het gebied, maar is voor vogels kijken minder interessant.
De westelijke en zuidelijke oever kan in voorjaar en najaar bij gunstige waterstand een sliklaag krijgen die steltlopers aantrekt. Pantana, Pittima reale zijn vaste gasten, maar elk jaar komt er wel een Piovanello maggiore in winterkleed aanvliegen.

Grote Grindgat is located near the village of Weurt along the Waal River. A walk around the lake is approximately 3.5 km. There is a small parking lot (press P in the map for directions). If you come from Nijmegen, take the first exit on the right after the lock of the Maas-Waalkanaal and follow the dike. You can also reach the area by bus by taking bus line 5 or 85 towards Beuningen, and getting off at the Weurt Kerkstraat bus stop (1).

Nederlands: Het Grote Grintgat ligt bij het dorp Weurt langs de rivier de Waal. Het gebied is gemakkelijk te belopen. Een wandeling rond het meer is ongeveer 3,5 kilometer. Er is een kleine parkeerplaats (druk op P in de kaart voor een routebeschrijving). Als je vanuit Nijmegen komt, neem dan de eerste afslag rechts na de sluis van het Maas-Waalkanaal en volg de dijk. Je kunt het gebied ook met de bus bereiken door buslijn 5 of 85 richting Beuningen te nemen, en uit te stappen bij de halte Weurt Kerkstraat (1).
