The Grolloo and Schoonloo forests are very diverse with, in addition to forest, open plains, heathland and ponds. The area surrounding the forests consists of small-scale agricultural landscape. Due to this composition, the bird population is also very diverse. Birds you can observe include Rigogolo, Albanella reale, Averla piccola, Averla maggiore, Cigno selvatico, Crociere comune, Picchio nero and Tarabuso.

Nederlands: De Boswachterijen Grolloo en Schoonloo zijn erg afwisselend met naast bos, open vlaktes, heide en vennen. De omgeving van de bossen bestaat uit kleinschalig agrarisch landschap. Door deze samenstelling is ook de vogelsoortensamenstelling zeer divers. Zo kun je er onder meer Rigogolo, Albanella reale, Averla piccola, Averla maggiore, Cigno selvatico, Crociere comune, Picchio nero en Tarabuso vinden.

The Grolloo and Schoonloo forests are located south of the city of Assen near the village of Grolloo. You can park on the west side of the area. Press P on the map for directions to the parking lot. Both major walks indicated on the map start from there and sometimes go over wooden boardwalks. You can easily shorten these two long walks (both more than 10 km long) to a shorter walk yourself.

Nederlands: De Boswachterijen Grolloo en Schoonloo liggen ten zuiden van Assen bij het dorp Grolloo. Je kunt parkeren aan de westkant van het gebied. Druk op P in de kaart voor een routebeschrijving naar de parkeerplaats. Beide op de kaart aangegeven grote wandelingen starten vanaf daar en gaan soms over vlonders. Je kunt deze twee lange wandelingen (beide meer dan 10 km lang) gemakkelijk zelf inkorten tot een kortere wandeling.
