Boswachterij Sint Anthonis is a former production forest that has been transformed into a diverse and rich landscape. In the last century, Scots pines were the dominant species here. These trees provided timber for the Dutch coal mines. After the mines closed, the forest lost its function, and the Dutch Forestry Commission (Staatsbosbeheer) began planting deciduous trees to create much more diversity. Between the forests lie large open heathlands, ponds, grasslands, and some small sand drifts. A major advantage is the openness of the forest, which gives some parts of the nature reserve an almost park-like feel. These open woodlands are ideal for birdwatching.
Birds you can encounter in the area include: Picchio nero, Tottavilla, Allodola, Prispolone, Pigliamosche, Balia nera, Codirosso, Succiacapre, Cuculo, Corvo imperiale, Lodolaio, Astore and in winter Averla maggiore and Albanella reale.

Nederlands: Boswachterij Sint Anthonis is een prachtig afwisselend bos- en heidegebied van 1.000 hectare. Dit voormalige productiebos is omgevormd tot een divers en rijk landschap. In de vorige eeuw zag je hier vooral de grove dennen. Deze bomen leverden stuthout voor de Limburgse kolenmijnen. Na het sluiten van de mijnen verloor het bos zijn functie en begon Staatsbosbeheer met de aanplant van loofbomen om de diversiteit te vergroten. Tussen de bossen liggen grote open heidevelden, vennetjes, graslanden en wat kleine zandverstuivingen. Grote plus is de openheid van het bos, waardoor sommige delen van het natuurgebied bijna parkachtig aandoen. In die open bossen is het aangenaam vogels kijken.
Vogels die je in het gebied kunt tegenkomen zijn ondermeer Picchio nero, Tottavilla, Allodola, Prispolone, Pigliamosche, Balia nera, Codirosso, Succiacapre, Cuculo, Corvo imperiale, Lodolaio, Astore en in de winter Averla maggiore en Albanella reale.

Boswachterij Sint Anthonis is located directly to the west of the village of Sint Anthonis and is easily accessible via the A73 and N272. Parking is available at various access points. A convenient large free car park is available on the Bosweg near restaurant De Heksenboom. Press P on the map for directions to this car park. Various marked circular walks ranging from 3 to 14 km start from the car park. The area also has numerous unmarked forest paths where you can walk and enjoy bird watching. The circular walk indicated on the map is approximately 8 km.

Nederlands: Boswachterij Sint Anthonis ligt direct ten westen van het dorp Sint Anthonis en is goed bereikbaar via de A73 en N272. Parkeren kan bij verschillende toegangspunten. Handig is de grote gratis parkeerplaats aan de Bosweg bij restaurant De Heksenboom. Druk op P in de kaart voor een routebeschrijving naar deze parkeerplaats. Vanuit de parkeerplaats vertrekken diverse gemarkeerde rondwandelingen van 3 tot 14 km. Maar het gebied heeft ook talloze niet gemarkeerde bospaden waar je mag wandelen en waar het aangenaam vogels kijken is. De op de kaart aangegeven rondwandeling is ongeveer 8 km.

By far the best time to visit Boswachterij Sint Anthonis is spring, when you'll see the most birds. August is also very beautiful when the heather is in bloom, but you'll see and hear significantly fewer birds then.

Nederlands: Veruit de beste tijd om Boswachterij Sint Anthonis te bezoeken is de lente, dan zie je de meeste vogels. In augustus is het er ook erg mooi als de heide in bloei staat, maar dan zie en hoor je wel beduidend minder vogels.
