The largest part of nature reserve the Bemmelse Waard is open for visitors to roam around. The central part is a reserve for farmlandbirds. The area is easily accesble on foot or per bike. The Bemmelse Waard has a few big lakes, the result of sand mining. Other lakes are former river beds. The lakes are good for wintering birds like Pesciaiola, Smergo maggiore, Quattrocchi, Svasso maggiore, Fischione, Moretta and the occasional Codone. At night, big flocks of Oca lombardella come in to stay the night on the water. Along the shores Corriere piccolo breeds and Sterna comune breeds on a small island.
Old clay pits are now overgrown with marsh and rivierine forests. At night you can see beaver in the water. Martin pescatore breeds at the ponds in these forests. Astore, Poiana, Picchio muratore, Codirosso and Airone cenerino breed in the forests. During migration and sometimes even in summer Falco pescatore spends the night in the forests and hunts in the lakes during the days. Also Aquila di mare visits this area. In one of the clay pits is a small colony of Mignattino comune.
In areas with thickets and thorny bushes Saltimpalo, Bigiarella, Sterpazzola, Forapaglie macchiettato and Cannaiola verdognola are common species. Along the river Topino breeds.
In the center, a patch of land managed for meadowbirds like Pavoncella and Pittima reale. But even with this special management the Pittima reale didn't return (yet). But, Pavoncella, Pettegola, Beccaccia di mare, Pispola and Cutrettola can be seen here. In winter vast flocks of geese feed on grasses here.

Nederlands: De Bemmelse Waard is een uiterwaard van de rivier de Waal midden in 'De Gelderse Poort'. Het is een natuurgebied met een typische riviernatuur. Het grootste deel van het natuurgebied is opengesteld voor bezoekers om rond te struinen. Het centrale deel is een reservaat voor boerenlandvogels. Het gebied is gemakkelijk te voet of per fiets te bereiken. De Bemmelse Waard heeft een paar grote plassen, ontstaan door zandwinning. Andere plassen zijn voormalige rivierbeddingen. De plassen zijn goed voor overwinterende vogels zoals Pesciaiola, Smergo maggiore, Quattrocchi, Svasso maggiore, Fischione, Moretta en af en toe Codone. 's Nachts komen grote groepen Oca lombardella om te overnachten op het water. Langs de oevers broedt Corriere piccolo en Sterna comune op een klein eilandje.
De oude kleiputten zijn nu begroeid met moeras- en rivierbossen. 's Nachts kun je bevers in het water zien. Martin pescatore broedt in de poelen in deze bossen. Astore, Poiana, Picchio muratore, Codirosso en Airone cenerino broeden in de bossen. Tijdens de trek en soms zelfs in de zomer overnacht Falco pescatore in de bossen en jaagt overdag in de meren. Ook Aquila di mare bezoekt dit gebied. In een van de kleiputten zit een kleine kolonie Mignattino comune.
In gebieden met struikgewas en doornstruiken zijn de Saltimpalo, Bigiarella, Sterpazzola, Forapaglie macchiettato en Cannaiola verdognola algemene soorten. Langs de rivier broedt de Topino.
In het midden ligt een stuk land dat beheerd wordt voor weidevogels als Pavoncella en Pittima reale. Maar zelfs met dit speciale beheer is de Pittima reale (nog) niet teruggekomen. Maar, Pavoncella, Pettegola, Beccaccia di mare, Pispola en Cutrettola zijn hier te zien. In de winter voeden grote groepen ganzen zich hier met gras.
