Ranomafana National Park is situated in a mountainous, hilly region, spanning over 40,000 hectares of rainforest. The park’s elevation ranges from 800 to 1,200 meters, create a mosaic of microclimates and habitats. Ranomafana is a sanctuary for a wide variety of wildlife. Over 12 species of lemurs live in the park, such as the critically endangered golden bamboo lemur and greater bamboo lemur, which the park was created to protect. Other species include the red-bellied lemur, Milne-Edwards' sifaka, and the mouse lemur, which can be seen during night walks. Visitors can also spot a variety of chameleons, frogs, and leaf-tailed geckos.
The park is a prime location for birdwatching, with around 120 species recorded, 30 of which are endemic to the park. Birding in Ranomafana is challenging as the park’s dense rainforest and steep terrain demand patience and a keen ear. Among the most sought-after sightings are the Pitta-like Ground-Roller, Rufous-headed Ground-Roller, Scaly Ground-Roller and Short-legged Ground-Roller. These elusive birds are most vocal and visible from September to January, making that the prime season for birders. Other interesting birds that can be found include Madagascar Ibis, Yellow-browed Oxylabes, Blue Vanga, Madagascar Cuckooshrike, Henst's Goshawk, Madagascar Swamp Warbler and Madagascar Blue-Pigeon.

Ranomafana National Park is located in the southeastern highlands of Madagascar, about 65 km east of Fianarantsoa and roughly 400 km south of Antananarivo. Most travelers reach it by driving the scenic RN7 highway from Antananarivo to Fianarantsoa, then branching east on RN25 toward the village of Ranomafana (1). The final stretch includes winding forest roads.
The park provides various hiking trails of differing lengths and difficulties, from shorter routes to multi-day treks. A reasonable fitness level is recommended for many of the trails, which can be steep and slippery. Visitors are required to explore the park with a local, certified guide. A guide can be arranged at the entrance or through your accommodation. Guided hikes range from short two-hour walks to multi-day treks with overnight camping. The most popular trails include Varibolomena (easy, 2 hours), Vohiparara (moderate, 4–5 hours), and Soarano (challenging, full-day).
Park fees are approximately 55,000 MGA (around €11) per person per day, plus guide fees that vary by trail length and group size. The park is open year-round. Accommodation options range from budget guesthouses to eco-lodges in Ranomafana village.
