Lake Almyros is one of the most important wetlands of western Crete. In the lake you can find many aquatic birds. The lake is not only worth a visit for waterfowl. In Georgioupoulis I found the largest Rondine roost I have seen so far! Among the other birds you can encounter are Pantana, Piro piro boschereccio, Beccaccino, Piro piro piccolo, Piro piro culbianco, Martin pescatore, Rondone maggiore, Garzetta, Gabbiano reale, Cardellino, Passera d'Italia and Usignolo di fiume.
