As the whole Neckar valley has lots of former and recent sand mining, there are many little lakes, that became conservation or recreation areas. On the lakes of Oberes Steinach there are always chances to see common and uncommon birds, as for the landscape around the river is more dominated by farmland and forest. Especially during migration there are also chances for rare birds. Among the birds you can see in the area are Fistione turco, Mestolone, Alzavola, Quattrocchi, Smergo maggiore, Tuffetto, Porciglione, Tarabuso, Beccaccino, Migliarino di palude, Ballerina gialla and Falco pellegrino.

The area is accessible from the west (Kläranlage Kiebingen) with parking along the road and also from the east (Bühl) with parking areas around Schloßsaal Bühl.
