The Kemnader See is located on the southern outskirts of the city of Bochum and borders on Witten and Hattingen. The shore of the reservoir is developed with paved paths and a cycle path. The lake is traversed by the river Ruhr, in the estuary area of the river, gravel islands are formed, where mainly gulls (up to 6 species!) can be observed in winter. The lake is also a roosting place for Oca canadese and Oca selvatica in winter. In winter: regular Quattrocchi, Pesciaiola, Smergo maggiore, Moriglione, Moretta, Alzavola, Canapiglia and Germano reale. Orco marino, Strolaga mezzana, Strolaga minore are occasional winter visitors, and Strolaga maggiore have also been observed. Martin pescatore can be seen regularly all year round, Topino in summer. Sterna comune and Mignattino comune are migrants, as is Falco pescatore. The black swans, which have been breeding here regularly for many years, are famous.
