After gravel mining ended in Freudenthal, the lakes became an important refuge for water birds. The area, which is now protected, offers suitable resting opportunities for many migratory birds and breeding opportunities for water-bound species in particular. The area is characterized by large groups of Cormorano, Folaga and Moriglione, but rarities such as Marangone minore, Sterna maggiore and Cigno selvatico have also been observed.
