Pointe de la Coubre becomes very interesting during spring and autumn migration, just before or after birds cross the Gironde. Migrating species include Falco pescatore, Falco di palude, Sterna maggiore, Merlo dal collare, Balia nera.
Breeding species include Pettazzurro, Cappellaccia, Calandro, Beccamoschino, Fanello, Luì bianco. On the ocean side of the beach breeds Fratino which nests are fenced and protected every year.
Wintering species include Orchetto marino, Stercorario maggiore and all sorts of waders and ducks (Piovanello maggiore, Corriere grosso, Chiurlo maggiore, Pittima reale, Pivieressa).

How to get there: By bike - bike trails from Rochefort (60km) and Royan (20km). Follow "Phare de la Coubre". By car - Follow "Phare de la Coubre" to get to the car park. Free car park but closed at night.
How to visit: on foot only, free access. From the car park, go south and follow the dunes. You can go to the very end of the sandpit that faces La Palmyre across the strait (5km one way, 10km round trip by foot).
